Spain bans all contact with Gibraltar hockey

Spain has banned its hockey teams from playing with Gibraltarian clubs, in a development that threatens to undermine cross-border links in the sport going back decades.

The move – which could also have ramifications in other sports - impacts not just on Spanish regional hockey federations and teams, but also on individual players, coaches and officials.

The edict from the Consejo Superior de Deportes, part of Spain’s Ministry for Education, Culture and Sport, prevents them from involvement in any friendly or competitive matches or tournaments in which a Gibraltarian side is participating, irrespective of where the game is taking place.

The decision was conveyed by the Real Federación Española de Hockey, the Spanish national hockey federation, in an email to the regional Andalucia federation, in which it warned of sanctions on hockey teams for maintaining sporting links with Gibraltar.
