Speaker urges ‘short, sharp’ question time in Parliament

The Speaker of Parliament, Adolfo Canepa, yesterday indicated that he would be taking a firmer stance in future during question and answer sessions.

Mr Canepa has repeatedly complained that MPs end up debating during question time in Parliament, and yesterday he drew a marker for MPs.

In a statement to Parliament, he explained that he had been perturbed during the July session, stating that matters did not proceed in the “best traditions of parliament”.

“I have no problem whatsoever in allowing whatever number of supplementary questions required an answer from ministers provided that they are relevant and provided that they are not made a pretext for a debate,” Mr Canepa said, as he detailed how he intends to proceed with regards to question time from now on.
