Squash - Flores and Nerney Win Squash’s Gibraltar Masters

The Gibraltar Squash Association had a highly successful event at Europa Sports Park whilst hosting the Gibraltar Masters tournament. Both Ivan Flores and Patrick Nerney won their divisions, fighting off strong competition from across Europe.
The tournament consisted of 8 divisions, separated by age group and gender. Gibraltar was represented in all age groups. In the headline over 35 group, Flores and Christian Navas placed strongly in the initial group stages and progressed to the semi finals. Navas was beaten by Richard Hill, an excellent player from Portugal, so an all Gibraltar final was denied. Flores avenged Navas’s defeat with an initially close final. However the strength, pace and accuracy of Flores wore the Portuguese player down, Flores closing out a convincing win.
In the Over 70’s section, a round robin format meant that all entrants had to play each other to determine the winner. Patrick Nerney was successful in defeating all of the other players in his section to claim the title for Gibraltar.
In the Women’s section, Leanne Moreno topped the Gibraltarian field placing a respectable fifth.
The tournament as a whole was a real success with even more participants than last year, showing what a popular location for squash Gibraltar is! This is followed in June by the return of professional squash, with the PSA Open on 27th June to 1st July, where top 100 players will feature.
