Unite backs staying in the EU

Unite the Union will campaign in favour of Britain and Gibraltar remaining within the European Union. This follows an Executive committee meeting of the Gibraltar branch.

It is imperative for the United Kingdom to form part of a remodelled European Union that protects workers rights and ensures that European institutions are accessible to all European Citizens, Unite said in a statement.

In respects to Gibraltar, a potential Brexit scenario would pave the way to uncertainty, the Union said.

“Uncertainty that Gibraltar could ill afford in an uncertain world.”

Brexit, Unite said, would put in the hands of our detractors the ability to restrict the flow at the frontier, both of persons and goods, which would have a significant impact on Gibraltar’s economy and services.  “Locally, we must put across our vision for Gibraltar and the benefits of our continued inclusion amongst the European family of countries, but furthermore, we must ensure that as many of our people vote, because we can make a difference in such closely contested elections, as we could have done in previous European elections.”

“Beyond our shores however, we must highlight our situation not only to the political class as our dignitaries are already so ably doing, but to the common man and woman of the United Kingdom, those individuals that have as of yet to form an opinion and want to look beyond the rhetoric; who are looking for a human story to the current debate which Gibraltar can provide.”

Unite has called an Extraordinary General Meeting of its Activists and Shop Stewards for Tuesday 26th April 2016 on the topic of Brexit - its impact and the steps the union will take to combat it.
